Becoming a perfect selfless servant of Christ is what a true Christian should be striving for. It is when one does nothing to love oneself but does everything to love God, through truly loving others. This should be our life’s goal. This is actually what Jesus did. This is what truly loves God and brings us to a saving faith.
Once we become aware that we have not been living our Christian faith correctly, as we should have been, this is when the transformation of our lives into becoming a true image of Christ can really begin. This transformation is not an easy quest, as for most of us, our entire lives has been revolved around ourselves… doing everything for love of self. This is true even if we have been doing “charity.”
The reality of our sinfulness, that without the fullness of God’s grace moving us (being perfect), some part or all parts of what we are doing are being moved by self, not God, is a concept we must understand if we are to obtain the goal of being a perfect selfless servant of Christ. We must know we have to work hard to die to ourselves, do God can live through us. This goal to remove ourselves (our will) and replace it with the fullness of God’s grace, so only good can be driving our thoughts, words and deeds is how we become a perfect selfless servant of Christ.
Honestly coming to understand this truth, our great sinfulness, is quite hard for most of us, since we like to think of ourselves as someone other than who we truly are, because our happiness is built upon the building up of ourselves (increasing our pride) and not through seeking to perfectly love God.
But if God has touched us and helped us to see at least some of the ways we are not loving Jesus as we should in others by living to love ourselves, then we have hope for change. It is only through humility–true self-knowledge of our sinfulness (of our great self-love), that we can honestly repent and begin to change.
